482nd FIS:

2010. Ed Note: I have been wanting to do this for 10 years but didn't have enough data or anything to anchor what I had. The unexpected appearance of Lt Albert Basinger (#3) this January took away the latter and gave me the first three names in order of arrival. I'll add to that the partial data that I have accumulated and hope some other orders and memories will show up. Several people have told me that in the beginning of the first year, each member knew his number of arrival in the squadron ... for example John Bell was (#1) and James Grooms was (#11), etc ... so if anyone remembers their position in that line, please let me know what it was. This may turn out to be a massive failure but it may be fun ... certainly challenging. I find the groups of assignees listed below, who had already served with each other, to be of particular interest. Also, we may find some of the forgotten/missing. GCW

FIRST YEAR PERSONNEL ARRIVALS

(partial and in process)

Officer & Enlisted Personnel known to be assigned to the 482nd FIS in 1956 & 2 months of 1957: We just received (Feb 2010) some important officer data for this time period from Lt Albert Basinger, included in the data below.

APRIL 1956

The First Twenty

[This may take a while...first off, I'm not certain there was just ONE numerical list that included both Officers and Enlisted. The Basinger data included three 1956 months (Aug/Sept/Oct) that lists officer arrivals and misc data such as street addresses is Goldsboro, etc. But if officers WERE included (as they should have been)...then the list went over 20 in August of '56 with James Grooms being #11 on Aug 2.]

#1) A1/C BELL, John Major --- (John was the first to sign-in AND the last to sign-out in late Sept 1965, along with James Mooring.)
Lt Col THOMAS, James M. --- Commander & Sr pilot [by ?, '56 ]

MAY 1956

#2) Major BATIE, John S. --- Executive Officer & Sr pilot [May 5, '56]
#3) Lt BASINGER, Albert E. Jr --- Armament Systems Officer, [May 20, '56]

JULY 1956

S/Sgt NEWCOMB, Aaron K. (somewhere between #4 & #10)

A/2C VELAZQUEZ, Nelson, AF14288190, 32231D, by July 23, 1956
Lt Col THOMAS arrived the same day and on the same flight as "Val."
[Unfortunately, that doesn't help much as Col Thomas was almost continually away from Seymour Johnson during the 1956 time period and popping in and out on military hops or using a DC Taxi (T-33). While he later roomed at the BOQ, in 1956 he was usually stopping at the Goldsboro Hotel. The first 482nd resident at the BOQ was Captain Rex Moore...all other officers, most with family, were living in various Goldsboro housing while base-housing was being constructed.]
