This list is an attempt to acquire/accumulate information on pilots that is not available otherwise. The NARA has issued a database for WWII enlisted, but not, as yet, for officers. The St. Louis warehouse fire of Air Force records may have destroyed the possibility of such a list EVER being built. So...I'll start this one for us.
This list is a rough seniority using a catch-as-catch-can method of service number priority. The list primarily indexes on the A-suffix service number, with second priority to the AO-prefix. No attempt at alphabetical order has been made but a rough linear order of appearance in the squadron does occur...especially in the awarding of Captain's rank.
Due to the complexity of WWII serial numbers (4), I have separated these pilots out with an extra-field listing. But Colonel Stockman's career defies category and definition re service number ranking.
It will take a while to finish this...I may have omitted pilots and listed non-pilots, etc. Some numbers strike me as being wrong but I don't know in what way or which digit. Everything that I see, has gone through a clerk typist's hands and the pick-off charts they were using. The latter caused, for example, confusion between Cols. Smith and Stockman's service numbers and Lts Bayman & Conable's. And typos, in the days of typewriters, while somewhat less than you'd expect, were present none-the-less. Donald Kaufman adds: "I can help with the info on the serial numbers. The AO numbers were assigned to reserve officers and the "A suffix" numbers were assigned to regular officers. Many of us came into the USAF as reserve officers and then were selected to become regulars. This all happened when the Social Security numbers were supposed to be sacrosanct and not to be used for normal identification."
