Paul L. Wagner

September 6, 2003

Paul called and said he had a microfilm reader that he'd give me if I'd come pick it up. My wife was working and it was a lovely day for a trip so I drove the 90 miles up to Pendleton, Indiana, where Paul lives. It wasn't just a reader, but also a printer...which made it one heavy piece of equipment. We were trying to decide how to load it when the light hit my eye and I said, "Wait a minute..." and got the camera out of the car. I'm tickled to death with this shot.

Paul isn't on computer and doesn't see much point in it. However, he keeps in touch with the world. He showed me his short wave set with Morse key..."The only way to do it," he said. And added, "Its what I do in the wintertime." Good to see him again...been 43 years. GCW

PS: Note the black straps running around each shoulder above ... they carried a heavy medical pack that dispersed medicine into Paul's blood stream. He couldn't go anywhere without it. So, while we didn't talk about it very much, we both knew where we were. And note too a little bit of humor in the shot above ... Paul had his right index finger cut off behind the second knuckle in a factory accident pre Air Force. He always joked about it but was self-conscious of it and always covered it before a photo was taken. Here, he had almost forgotten and said "Wait!" and covered it ... which made me smile in understanding ... and his smile is in answer to that. GCW
