William Luther Bateman, 73, 407 Mill Street, Elizabeth City, N.C., died Friday, March 13, 2009, at his residence. A native of Pasquotank County he was the son of the late Claude Bateman and Alma Berry Bateman and the husband of Florine Norfleet Bateman of the residence. He was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 21 years as an aviation mechanic, and was a Methodist.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Cindy Sawyer of Elizabeth City, NC, Rosa Johnston of Atlanta, GA, and Michelle Bateman of Gates County, NC; two brothers, William Claude Bateman Jr. of Elizabeth City, NC, and Loyd Russell Bateman of Nevada; two sisters, Dollie Trueblood of Elizabeth City, NC, and Lucille Koval of St. Petersburg, FL; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A visitation will be held Wednesday, March 18, 2009, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church Street. The family requests no flowers, but memorial donations may be made to the William Clarence Jackson VFW Post 6060, P.O. Box 1384, Elizabeth City, N.C. 27906.
