MOORESVILLE -- James Butler Chapman, 69, Brantley Acres, died Friday (April 18, 2003) at his residence.
Born Nov. 15, 1933, in Salisbury, Mr. Chapman was a son of the late Eugene and Mabel Readling Chapman.
He served in the Navy during the Korean Conflict, then served in the Air Force, retiring in 1974 with 221/2 years of total service. He was a member of the Air Force Sergeants and Non-Commissioned Officers associations.
He also later retired as an instructor of industrial electronics at Florence/Darlington Technical College, Florence, S.C.
Mr. Chapman was a member of St. David's Masonic Lodge, Darlington, S.C.
He was preceded in death by son Mark David Chapman.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Janice Burcham Chapman; sons Kyle Matthew Chapman, Mooresville, and Ryan James Chapman, Boone; daughter Cynthia Robin Hanson, Salisbury; brother Mitchell Chapman, Gastonia; and two grandchildren.
Services: Memorial, 4 p.m. Monday, Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. W. Lawrence Ownbey. Burial at a later date in Atwood, Ill.
Visitation: After the service.

ATWOOD - James Butler Chapman, 69, of Mooresville, N.C., died April 18, 2003, at home.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. today at Mackville Cemetery, Atwood, with military rites accorded. The Rev. Richard Woodworth will officiate.
Hilligoss Shrader Funeral Home, 66 E. U.S. 36, Atwood, is in charge of arrangements.
