Ramon E. Wirzfeld


SCRANTON- Ramon Edward Wirzfeld, 79, of rural Scranton, Kansas, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007. He was born July 7, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Nicholas John and Lydia Helena Anna (Rodekuhr) Wirzfeld. He graduated from high school in Moro, Arkansas in 1944.

He joined the Navy on April 26, 1945 and served on the USS Brinkley Bass, deployed to Japan during World War II. He was discharged in 1947. He joined the Air Force on June 13, 1951 and retired on October 1, 1968 as a Master Sergeant.

He worked for the U.S. Postal Service Materiel Distribution Center until retiring from there on April 1, 1991. He was a member of the VFW, the American Legion Post #125, and the Air Force Sergeants Association.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Rose on November 22, 2005 and his son-in-law, Robert Thomas Schlagel on December 2, 2006. He is survived by his son, Michael Wirzfeld of Ironton, Ohio; daughters, Debra Schlagel of Topeka, Diana Cross and her husband, Jeff, and Denise Bahner and her husband, Del, all of Overbrook; grandchildren, Brent and Brian Wirzfeld of Ironton, Ohio, Samantha and William Schlagel, Kaci and Cody Cross, and Caleb, Jesse and Daniel Bahner; brothers, Robert Wirzfeld and his wife Thelma of Mabelvale, Arkansas and Nicholas Wirzfeld and his wife, Betty of Little Rock, Arkansas; and a sister, Ruth Murphy of Dardanelle, Arkansas.

Mr. Wirzfeld will be in state from 3 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood-Roberts Funeral Home in Overbrook where the family will receive friends from 6 to 7:00 p.m., Thursday evening. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m., Friday, March 30, 2007 at the Carbondale Church of Christian Fellowship at Carbondale. Interment with military honors will follow in Overbrook Cemetery.

Memorial contributions to the Ramon Wirzfeld Memorial Fund at Santa Fe Trail High School may be sent to the funeral home at Box 268, Overbrook, KS 66524.
