VIRGINIA TICHENOR

Virginia went from a whisper of a child with braces to a lovely, dedicated, Folk Rag player right before a blink of my eye. Her unique experience of growing up at 3801 Federer in St. Louis has set her apart from all other players, forever. We would hear someone practicing..."What's that?"..."Just Virginia."...then in the late 1980s Virginia began playing on the Goldenrod showboat during the rag fests in St. Louis. Marriage came and she moved away. Life went on. Not many noticed. In the early 90s I went back to St. Louis to see old friends and take a few shots...suddenly I heard this thunder coming from above, on the Goldenrod's second deck..."Who's that?!!"..."Oh...I think that's just Virginia."...I answered with something I can't quote and tore upstairs. There she was, bouncing away, landing the strongest left hand in ragtime, maybe by 200% over any player except Morten Larsen. What a metamorphosis! Virginia plays in a variety of styles covering the entire Ragtime spectrum, no mean feat, but excels in the Folk medium, drawing heavily from the works of her father, Trebor Tichenor, the late Tom Shea, and Brun Campbell. A new CD has just been released on PianoMania. This is one of the new Folk Rag torch bearers, folks.
