DAVID THOMAS ROBERTS

St. Louis, Missouri : © June 10, 1980 by George C. Willick

This was a Tuesday morning during the very lean and struggling years for Roberts. David had made up his mind that he would support himself solely through his music. A couple of fans had pooled a little money for David to make the bus trip to the St Louis Ragtime Festival but he was pretty much without means after that. David had stayed the night with me at a motel and I was delivering him to Tichenor's home where Trebor had offered David a couch in the basement for the week. But when we got there Trebor wasn't home so we lounged on the grass in the front yard. The dark green of the bush, the white shirt, and the black Brentanno bag started working my eye so I opened the camera and took a look. But the shot just wasn't there, so I rolled away from David one revolution and saw this. I have always been pleased with the image. David, at this point, was feeling some apprehension about the week ahead. The viewer will understand that if you study the collapsed bag. Everything David had with him for the week he was either wearing or was contained in that bag.
