CARL HALEN & BILL MASON

Dayton, Ohio. İMarch 22, 1981 - George C. Willick

During this period Carl was running a tree farm in the Cincinnati- Dayton area. He was an active Cincinnati Jazz Club member and almost always attended the meetings, occasionally fronting a band there. (Tom Hyer, drummer of Carl's old Gin Bottle Seven and the later Gene Mayl bands, was usually there too.) But today Carl had come to hear the Ragtimers play in Dayton.

Now Carl never understood what a trumpet legend he was in Hot Jazz. While the double trumpet work with Dick Oxtot for Gene Mayl was awesome, my favorite was the trumpet solo work for Riverside with Bob Greene. I noticed Bill sort of watching Carl out of the corner of his eye and I asked if he'd like to have a photo of himself with Carl. "Sure, would you do that?" "No problem, come on..." So I towed Bill over and proposed the photo to Carl, who greeted Bill with mutual respect and admiration. Carl is a very intelligent man, always gracious, and was used to my camera pushiness from Cincinnati. Two nicer men than this in Traditional Jazz, you'll not find. GCW
