Raymond Z. Gallun

Attended University of Wisconsin 1929-30; the Alliance Francaise, 1938-39, in Paris, France; and, San Marcos University in 1960 in Lima, Peru. Before WWII, Gallun performed common labor in a cannery, a hemp mill, and in a shoe factory. He then traveled to Paris where he taught English to German refugees until the outbreak of the war when he returned home. During the war, Gallun worked construction for a while with the Corp of Engineers and then took a job as a marine blacksmith in the Pearl Harbor Navy yard in 1944.

Gallun (pronouced Gal-loon) began writing SF in the 1930s while still in high school and continued throughout that decade, selling to the pulps regularly and creating the body of his work. A favorite magazine for his sales was Astounding. He dropped out after WWII and returned after retirement to add some new stories and touch up some of the old. Long life allowed Gallun's stories to be anthologized many times.

Ray came into the field when every story was still an idea not yet written and saw SF grow to a resemblance of prosperity and respectibility before he passed. Along the way he added things that we still see today...even expect...such as communicating aliens. [Not sure who added the English speaking ones.]
