Leo Margulies

At the time of the onset of the stroke that was to take his life, Leo was in England attending a meeting of the Mystery Writers of America meeting, and was still active as the editor of Mike Shayne's Mystery Magazine.

Although born in Brooklyn, Leo grew up in Norwalk, Conn. He attended Columbia University for a while before opting to join the staff of Munsey Magazine. Margulies then worked for Fox Films for five years until hired as editorial chief of Standard Magazines. During WW II, Margulies was a war correspondent and was onboard the Missouri when the Japanese surrendered.

After the war Leo returned to publishing and, at one point, was simultaneously editing 46 magazines. Startling Stories and Thrilling Wonder Stories were two of his best known SF magazines. As an editor, Leo was noted for making quick decisions on buying stories and sending swift payment, which made him a writer's favorite editor. When the 40s ended Margulies was one of those editors who saw the pulps as dead and that the future was in the paperback book. Leo founded Popular Paperback Library and in 1949 co-edited My Best Science Fiction Story using 25 authors. Many anthologies followed.
