P. Schuyler Miller
"If, for whatever reason, a breeding population does get to another
planet of another star, I feel sure they'll be coming back eventually. May be no one here, of course..."
Miller grew up in the Mohawk Valley in New York state where he acquired an interest in the Mohawk and Iroquois Indians. He attended Union College in Schnectady, receiving an M.S. in chemistry. Miller worked for General Electric in the 1940's as a technical writer and joined the New York State Archaeological Association and pursued his native american interests as an amateur archaeologist.
Another hobby was Science Fiction. Miller wrote during the formulative pulp period of the 1930s, where he helped control direction with stories like"Spawn," "Crysalis," and "The Titan." In 1952, Miller removed to Pittsburgh where he worked for Fisher Scientific Company until his death. During this change of life style, Schuy also began book reviewing for Astounding, and later, Analog. This marked a shift in SF away from writing fictional stories into journalistic works.
Miller was on an Indian archeaological tour when he died of a heart attack at the 'Fort Ancient Civilization' remains west of Parkersburg, W. Va. After his death, Mary E. Drake, his sister, donated his collection of maps, books, documents, periodicals and personal notes to the Carnegie Museum. The P. Schuyler Miller Memorial Library is now housed at the Edward O'Neill Research Center, 5800 Baum Blvd., Pittsburgh, PA. 15206-3706
