Sam Moskowitz
Sam was one of those New York City area fans whose SF career was
lopped into threes; before, during, and after WWII. Everyone was
changed by the war. Pre-war stories are totally different from post-war
stories. Sam was a major fan before the war, did his tour in the Army as a member
of a tank destroying battalion, and then worked as an editor for
several trade journals, primarily focused on the frozen foods field.
Sam was a born manager, had to do that, couldn't help himself. Author of
The Immortal Storm, a fan history of New
York in the 1930s and 40s. Sam worked in a niche in the SF field that let
him act as helper, historian, and organizer while holding a high fan presence.
Moskowitz often acted as agent, anthologized the works of early writers, and
focused on the roots of science fiction.
Much has been made of an early sf convention clash (pre-war) between Moskowitz and Wollheim. Be that
as it may, both men learned from the event and shifted personalities just enough
that they were able to associate with each other in the later years.
